Using the pull down menus, SCIMS can be searched on one or more fields of the SCIMS record.

  • To conduct a new search use the back button or using the key board key Alt/back arrow on key tab.
  • SCIMS searches for words or phrases found anywhere in the field and will search for all instances of a word. For example Sri Lankan will retrieve both Sri Lankan and Sri Lanka; Indian will retrieve both Indian and India.
  • Exact punctuation is required.
  • SCIMS is NOT case sensitive.

LCCN: Searches by the Library of Congress Control Number, 010 in a MARC record. This is a unique number assigned at the time of cataloging. Example: 72-902127

Title: Searches by the primary title taken from field 245 of the MARC record. For generic titles such as report or annual report: Type the title / [slash] issuing body. You may also type in any word or portion of the corporate body as phrase. This will retrieve all records with that word or phrase in the title.
Example: Annual report / Dept. of Space
Example: space. Retrieves all records with the word space in the title including Annual report of the Dept. of Space as well as Vayu aerospace review.

Country: Searches by country where the title is published

Language: Searches by the primary language of a journal.

Frequency: Searches by the frequency of the title.

Participant: Searches by a particular library participating in the South Asia Cooperative Acquisitions Program. See the Legend to interpret the library code or link to Holding Libraries for more information about the Library and its collections.

Source: Searches by the organization responsible for the intellectual content of a serial.
Example: Indian Institute of Science will retrieve all titles issued/published by this Institute
Example: Indian Institute will retrieve all titles with the phrase "Indian institute" anywhere in source

To search more than one field

SCIMS can be searched on multiple fields using the pull-down menu. Clicking on more than one field will highlight that field and search it as an AND statement with any other field selected and highlighted. To disengage a search field, click again on that field so it is no longer highlighted.

Example: Weeklies from India received by the University of Wisconsin: Country = India <AND> Frequency = weekly <AND> Participant = 11.
Example: Sri Lankan Tamil journals: Country = Sri Lanka <AND> Language = Tamil.
